About Piazza De Ferrari
Genoa's magnificent main square, a grand Art Nouveau fountain at its centre, flanked by the Carlo Felice opera house, the Stock Exchange, and the Palazzo Ducale.
Piazza De Ferrari is the central civic square of modern Genoa, a grandiose space created in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as the Ligurian capital asserted its commercial and cultural importance. The square is dominated by the large circular fountain in bronze, added in 1936, whose jets rise and fall in patterns that make it one of the most animated public spaces in northern Italy. Around it stand buildings of considerable architectural ambition: the neoclassical Teatro Carlo Felice opera house (rebuilt after WWII damage and reopened in 1991); the Renaissance-style Palazzo della Borsa (Stock Exchange), now a modern exhibition space; the Accademia Ligustica di Belle Arti; and the great facade of the Palazzo Ducale. The square is the gateway between the historic medieval centre to the west and the modern city to the east, and it functions as a genuine urban gathering place, on warm evenings, Genoese of all ages gather around the fountain, the cafes spill onto the pavements, and the square fills with the sort of spontaneous social life that is one of the great pleasures of Italian city life.
Did you know? The Piazza De Ferrari fountain jets can be individually programmed, on special occasions the water display is choreographed to music, creating a theatrical spectacle visible from the surrounding buildings.
