About Galata Museo del Mare
The largest maritime museum in the Mediterranean, featuring a full-scale 17th-century Genoese galley, the visitable submarine Nazario Sauro, and the history of Atlantic emigration.
The Galata Museo del Mare is the largest maritime museum in the Mediterranean and one of the most impressive in Europe, housed in a converted seventeenth-century arsenal in the Porto Antico (Old Port) area. The museum traces Genoa's extraordinary relationship with the sea over fifteen centuries, from its emergence as a trading power in the early medieval period to its role as the embarkation point for millions of European emigrants to the Americas in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The collection's most spectacular exhibit is a full-scale reproduction of a seventeenth-century Genoese war galley, complete with oarsmen, rigging, and authentic period armament. Moored at the dock in front of the museum is the submarine Nazario Sauro, an Italian Navy submarine launched in 1976 and now a floating annex of the museum, which visitors can board and explore from bow to stern. It is one of the very few submarines in Europe that can be visited, and descending through its cramped compartments gives a vivid sense of the conditions in which its crew lived and worked. The museum also houses one of Europe's most moving exhibitions on emigration, recreating the experience of the millions who left Genoa for the Americas.
Did you know? The submarine Nazario Sauro moored at the Galata museum was an active Italian Navy submarine launched in 1976; since 2010 it has been open to the public as a floating annex, one of the very few submarines anywhere in Europe that visitors can actually board and walk through.
