About Plainpalais

Geneva's lively multicultural open square, host to a famous flea market on Wednesdays and Saturdays, skateboarders, circus tents, and the beating social heart of Carouge-side Geneva.

The Plaine de Plainpalais is Geneva's largest open public space, a vast, flat, car-free expanse in the southwest of the city that functions as the city's social commons. Unlike the elegant lakeside promenades and the formal parks of the city centre, Plainpalais has a deliberately rough, democratic character. It is permanently occupied by skateboarders, dog walkers, picnickers, and groups of people from Geneva's many immigrant communities. Twice weekly, on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, it hosts one of the most authentic flea markets in French-speaking Switzerland, where dealers sell antiques, vintage clothes, secondhand books, old tools, and all manner of curiosities at stalls spreading across the entire square. The market has a genuinely eclectic character and rewards patient browsing. At various times of year, visiting circuses set up their tents here, and the square hosts concerts, open-air cinema events, and festivals. Plainpalais is surrounded by museums, the contemporary art museum MAMCO is nearby, as are the Natural History Museum, the ethnography museum, and the Patek Philippe Museum, making it a cultural hub as well as a social one. The whole district has a studenty, creative energy that provides a vital counterweight to Geneva's more institutional character.

Did you know? The Plainpalais flea market (held Wednesday and Saturday mornings) is one of the most eclectic and authentic markets in French-speaking Switzerland, drawing dealers and browsers from across the region.
