The Rheinuferpromenade, Rhine bank promenade, is one of the most successful urban regeneration projects in German history. When the federal motorway that ran along the Rhine riverbank was put underground in 1993-1995, Düsseldorf gained a spectacular car-free promenade, about 2 kilometres long, stretching from the old town to the Medienhafen (Media Harbour). The promenade offers some of the finest views of the Rhine in any German city, the river is wide and majestic here, and the opposite bank features a mix of industrial heritage, residential buildings, and green spaces. Looking south, the dramatic skyline of the Medienhafen, with Frank Gehry's three tilting and leaning Neuer Zollhof towers, provides a striking architectural backdrop. The promenade is the city's main outdoor living room, packed with cyclists, joggers, families, and restaurant-goers throughout the year.
