About Burgplatz & Rhine Promenade

Burgplatz is one of Düsseldorf's most historic public spaces, located directly on the bank of the Rhine and marking the site of the original medieval castle, 'Burg' in German, that gave the city its early identity. The Round Tower (Rundturm or Schlossturm) that survives on the square is the last remaining element of the Düsseldorf Castle that was destroyed in 1872. The tower itself now houses a museum devoted to Rhine shipping history. From Burgplatz, the famous Rhine Promenade (Rheinuferpromenade) stretches both north and south, a long, beautifully designed pedestrian walkway along the east bank of the Rhine, created in the 1990s by transforming a formerly traffic-heavy road into one of the finest riverside promenades in Germany. The combination of the historic tower, the broad Rhine, and the lively café terrace culture makes Burgplatz a particularly attractive gathering place.
