About St Patrick's Cathedral
Ireland's largest church, founded in 1191 beside the well where St Patrick baptised converts, and the burial place of Jonathan Swift.
St Patrick's Cathedral stands on one of the oldest Christian sites in Ireland, built beside the well where Ireland's patron saint traditionally baptised converts in the 5th century. The current Gothic cathedral dates from 1191 and has been continuously in use for over 830 years, making it the longest-standing building in continuous use in Ireland.
The cathedral is the National Cathedral of the Church of Ireland. Its most famous Dean was Jonathan Swift, author of Gulliver's Travels and A Modest Proposal, who served from 1713 to 1745. He is buried here alongside his beloved companion Esther Johnson, known as 'Stella'. Swift himself composed the Latin epitaph on his tomb, which W.B. Yeats famously translated: 'Swift has sailed into his rest; Savage indignation there cannot lacerate his breast.'
The interior is filled with medieval tombs, battle standards, and the ornate memorial to the Boyle family including the young Robert Boyle, later the father of modern chemistry.
Did you know? The phrase 'chancing your arm' originates from a 1492 peace gesture at this cathedral, when the Earl of Kildare cut a hole in a door and thrust his arm through to shake hands with a rival.
