About Dublin Castle
Built in 1204 as the seat of English and later British rule in Ireland for over 700 years, and now where Irish presidents are inaugurated.
Dublin Castle was built in 1204 on the orders of King John, on the site of a Viking stronghold at the south-east corner of the original Norse town. For over seven centuries it served as the administrative centre of English and British rule in Ireland, the seat of the Lord Lieutenant who governed Ireland on behalf of the Crown. Its handsome Georgian State Apartments were where the rulers of Ireland held court, and they retain much of their 18th-century grandeur today.
On 16 January 1922, the keys of Dublin Castle were formally handed over to Michael Collins and the Provisional Government of the Irish Free State, a moment of extraordinary historical weight after 718 years of foreign administration. The castle today is used for State functions, and the inauguration of each new Irish President takes place in St Patrick's Hall. Archaeological excavations beneath the castle have revealed Viking-era walls, a moat, and the base of the original Norman Powder Tower. The Chester Beatty Library, one of the world's great manuscript collections, occupies the castle grounds.
Did you know? When Michael Collins received the handover of Dublin Castle in 1922, he reportedly told the British official: 'We've been waiting 700 years, you can have the seven minutes' it was late.
