About Howth Cliff Walk
A spectacular coastal headland north of Dublin, accessible by DART train, with dramatic cliff walks, a medieval castle, and celebrated seafood restaurants.
Howth is a small fishing village and peninsula on the northern headland of Dublin Bay, easily accessible from the city centre by DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit) in about 25 minutes. The peninsula offers some of the finest coastal walking in the Dublin region, with a network of cliff paths offering spectacular views across Dublin Bay, Ireland's Eye island, and the Wicklow Mountains to the south.
The main cliff walk is a loop of approximately 6 kilometres along dramatic sea cliffs, through heathland and gorse, with sweeping views in every direction. The walk varies from easy to moderately challenging and takes 2-3 hours at a comfortable pace.
Howth village itself is a working fishing harbour with a thriving restaurant scene based on the daily fish landings, Howth's seafood restaurants, particularly around the harbour, are among the finest in the Dublin region. Howth Castle and its magnificent walled rhododendron gardens provide a second focus for visitors, and the cliff top in spring is ablaze with gorse and heather.
Did you know? Grace O'Malley, the 16th-century Irish pirate queen, allegedly kidnapped the Lord of Howth's grandson and made him promise to keep the castle gates always open to strangers, a custom the family claims to observe today.
