About Sainte-Bénigne Cathedral
Dijon's Gothic cathedral, built over a Romanesque predecessor, with an extraordinary early Romanesque crypt containing the tomb of Saint Benignus, the early Christian martyr who, by tradition, brought Christianity to Burgundy.
The Cathedral of Saint-Bénigne in Dijon is the city's episcopal cathedral, a Gothic building begun in 1280 on the site of a much older church associated with Saint Benignus of Dijon, a 3rd-century martyr who, according to tradition, first brought Christianity to Burgundy from Lyon. The cathedral was rebuilt in the Gothic style from 1280-1325 on the site of an earlier Romanesque abbey church, parts of which still survive in the extraordinary crypt beneath the current building. The crypt is one of the finest examples of early Romanesque architecture in France: a series of interconnected spaces on three levels, including the rotunda at the western end (dating from the 6th century or earlier), the lower crypt with its ancient carved capitals and columns of remarkable variety, and the central tomb chamber where the remains of Saint Benignus are venerated. The Gothic nave above is of considerable quality, with fine capitals, medieval glass, and the characteristic Burgundian restraint in architectural decoration. The cathedral's façade was given an elaborate 19th-century restoration that added the neo-Gothic portal.
Did you know? The crypt of Saint-Bénigne Cathedral contains columns and carved capitals dating from before the Carolingian period, some possibly from a late Roman or early Christian structure on the site, making it one of the oldest sacred sites in Burgundy.
