About St Fin Barre's Cathedral
A breathtaking French Gothic masterpiece completed in 1879, designed by William Burges with soaring spires, a golden angel weathervane, and an exquisite mosaic floor.
St Fin Barre's Cathedral crowns the south of Cork city with three magnificent limestone spires that can be seen for miles around. Completed in 1879 to designs by the eccentric Victorian architect William Burges, it replaced a medieval cathedral on the same site where Saint Finbarr, Cork's patron saint, established a monastic school in the 7th century. The cathedral's ornate French Gothic interior is awash with carved angel sculptures, richly coloured stained glass, and a stunning mosaic floor. Above the west door, the famous golden angel weathervane is said to herald the end of the world when it descends. Burges's vision was breathtakingly ambitious: every surface, from the baptistry ceiling to the choir stalls, is intricately detailed. The cathedral remains an active Church of Ireland place of worship and one of the finest Victorian ecclesiastical buildings anywhere in Europe.
Did you know? The golden angel weathervane atop the west tower is said, according to local legend, to signal the end of the world when it finally descends.
