About Riquewihr
A walled, half-timbered Alsace wine village about eleven kilometres from Colmar, home to roughly 999 people, guarded by the Dolder tower of 1291 and renowned for its Riesling.
Riquewihr is a walled wine village in the Haut-Rhin, about eleven kilometres from Colmar on the Alsace Wine Route and a member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. Home to roughly 999 people, it sits at around 295 metres among the vineyards on the eastern slopes of the Vosges. Its townscape still looks much as it did in the sixteenth century, protected by a double ring of walls whose origins reach back to the thirteenth century.
The village is dominated by the Dolder, a fortified gate-tower of 1291 that serves as its emblem and now houses a museum on the defence of a fortified town. Historically the property of the Dukes of Württemberg, Riquewihr became Protestant in the sixteenth century. Like all of Alsace it changed hands between France and Germany, yet it escaped serious damage in the Second World War, which helped preserve its old houses. It is renowned for Riesling and other Alsace wines.
