About Covered Market

A bright 1865 market hall of pink sandstone, brick and cast-iron beside the Lauch, now a permanent terroir market where about twenty traders sell cheese, wine and regional Alsace produce.

The Marché Couvert, Colmar's covered market, stands at 13 rue des Écoles on the bank of the Lauch, near the old customs house. Inaugurated in 1865 to a design by the architect Louis-Michel Boltz, who also built the municipal theatre, it is a fine example of nineteenth-century industrial architecture: pink sandstone and red-and-white brick beneath a glass roof carried on cast-iron posts. Its riverside position once allowed market gardeners to unload produce directly from boats on the Lauch.

A niche at the southwest corner holds a fountain figure of a young winegrower, the Petit Vigneron, made by Auguste Bartholdi and installed in 1869; the original was moved to the Bartholdi Museum in 1986 and replaced by a copy. After serving for years as a car park, the hall was restored and became a permanent market again on 14 September 2010, home today to around twenty traders selling regional produce.

Did you know? Before its restoration, the elegant 1865 hall spent years serving as a car park; it only reopened as a permanent food market, selling regional Alsace produce, on 14 September 2010.
