About Vernazza
Widely considered the most beautiful of the Cinque Terre villages, Vernazza possesses the only natural harbour on this stretch of coast, a sheltered cove enclosed by coloured houses, crowned by a 15th-century watchtower and a Gothic church set directly on the rocks.
Vernazza is consistently ranked the most beautiful village in the Cinque Terre and among the most beautiful on the entire Italian coast. It is distinguished by the only natural harbour among the five villages, a small, sheltered cove that has made Vernazza a functioning fishing community for a thousand years. The harbour opens to the sea through a cleft in the cliff, and on its landward side expands into Piazza Marconi, the main square, which sits almost at sea level and serves as the social heart of village life. The Church of Santa Margherita d'Antiochia, begun in the 14th century with its distinctive octagonal campanile, stands directly on the harbour rocks. Above the village on the northeast promontory, the cylindrical Castello Doria, built in the 15th century against Saracen pirate raids, offers the finest panoramic view in the entire Cinque Terre. Vernazza has approximately 800 permanent residents and was severely damaged by flooding in October 2011, but the community rebuilt the village largely through its own collective effort.
