About Manarola
Built on a dramatic dark sandstone rock shelf jutting into the sea, Manarola is the most photographed Cinque Terre village at night and hosts the world's largest illuminated nativity scene, the presepe, lit up on its hillside each Christmas.
Manarola occupies a narrow shelf of dark sandstone rock that juts into the Ligurian Sea, its tall narrow houses stacked so densely on the cliff face that from a distance they appear to be a single organism grown from the rock itself. The village dates to at least the 13th century, with the name derived from the Latin 'magna rota' (great wheel), a reference to the millwheel that once processed grain from the terraced hillsides above. Natural rock platforms extend into the sea at the base of the village, creating sheltered swimming areas. The village is most famous for two things: its extraordinary appearance when illuminated at night, the colour reflections on the water below the rock platform making Manarola the most-photographed Cinque Terre scene, and its Christmas presepe, recognised by Guinness World Records as the world's largest illuminated nativity scene, built annually on the hillside above the village with over 300 handmade illuminated figures. The village produces wine under the Cinque Terre DOC, including Sciacchetrà, the rare sweet wine of the region.
Did you know? Manarola's name comes from the Latin 'magna rota', the great wheel, referring to the millstone that once processed grain from the terraced hillsides, reminding us that this was always as much a farming village as a fishing community.
