About Riviera dei Ciclopi

The dramatic volcanic coastline north of Catania, with the Faraglioni dei Ciclopi, sea stacks said to be the rocks thrown by the blinded Cyclops Polyphemus at Odysseus, rising from the sea at Acitrezza.

The Riviera dei Ciclopi, the Riviera of the Cyclops, stretches north of Catania along the Ionian coast through the towns of Aci Castello, Acitrezza, Acireale, and others, a coastline of extraordinary volcanic drama where black basalt lava meets the intensely blue sea. The centrepiece is the Faraglioni dei Ciclopi at Acitrezza: dramatic sea stacks of black volcanic rock rising from the sea, associated since antiquity with the myth of the Cyclops Polyphemus, who, blinded by Odysseus, hurled enormous rocks after the fleeing ships. The largest faraglione, the Isola Lachea, is a marine reserve. The town of Acitrezza is also the setting of Giovanni Verga's masterpiece novel 'I Malavoglia' (1881), one of the foundational works of Italian literary Realism.

Did you know? The Faraglioni at Acitrezza have been identified with the rocks of the Odyssey since at least the 5th century BC, this is one of the oldest continuous mythological associations of any specific place in the world.
