About Chiesa della Collegiata
One of the finest Baroque churches in Catania, its undulating concave and convex facade on Via Etnea representing the most sophisticated moment of Sicilian Baroque architecture.
The Chiesa della Collegiata, the church of the collegiate chapter, stands on the east side of Via Etnea just north of Piazza del Duomo and is considered by many architectural historians to have the finest Baroque facade in Catania. Designed by the architect Stefano Ittar and consecrated in 1768, the facade is a masterpiece of Sicilian Baroque inventiveness: a composition of undulating concave and convex surfaces, columns, pilasters, niches, and sculptural ornament that creates a constant play of light and shadow as the sun moves around it. The black lava and white limestone combination creates an unusually dramatic visual contrast. The interior is elegant and relatively restrained by Sicilian standards, but the facade is the reason to come.
Did you know? The Collegiata's undulating facade was inspired by the Roman Baroque of Borromini, specifically his San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane, adapted to the Catanian material palette of black lava and white limestone.
