About Molenbeek & Canal District

Brussels' multicultural canal district, with an industrial heritage now undergoing creative regeneration, featuring Tour & Taxis event complex, street art, independent galleries, and the planned Kanal Centre Pompidou.

Molenbeek-Saint-Jean (Sint-Jans-Molenbeek in Dutch) is one of Brussels' 19 communes, occupying the west bank of the Canal de Charleroi in the western part of the inner city. The name means "mill stream" in Dutch, a reminder of its pre-industrial origins. In the 19th century it became heavily industrialised, factories, breweries, workshops, and attracted a large working-class population.

In recent decades, Molenbeek has gained international notoriety for political and security reasons, but the reality on the ground is more complex and more interesting: a neighbourhood of genuine multicultural vitality with a large Moroccan and North African community, an emerging creative scene, extraordinary street art, and major regeneration projects. Tour & Taxis, a vast converted early 20th-century freight railway terminal, has become a major cultural event space. The canal quays are being reimagined as urban parkland and cultural corridors.

Did you know? Tour & Taxis, the centrepiece of Molenbeek's regeneration, is a 1907 freight railway depot of extraordinary architectural beauty, its main hall is 300 metres long with iron-and-glass vaulting.
