About Cinquantenaire Park & Triumphal Arch
A vast triumphal arch and parkland in the EU quarter, built to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Belgian independence, housing world-class museums of art, history, military history, and a spectacular collection of vintage automobiles.
The Parc du Cinquantenaire, Fiftieth Anniversary Park, was created by King Leopold II to mark the 50th anniversary of Belgian independence in 1880. The monumental triumphal arch that frames the park's eastern end was commissioned by Leopold II and completed in 1905 for the World's Fair, designed by Charles Girault. The arch's top is crowned by a bronze quadriga, a chariot drawn by four horses, representing Brabant raising the national flag.
The three great museum buildings flanking the arch house some of Belgium's finest collections: the Musées royaux d'Art et d'Histoire (Art and History Museum) with its extraordinary collection of ancient civilisations and decorative arts; the Autoworld museum with over 200 vintage automobiles in a magnificent art-deco hall; and the Royal Military Museum, one of the most comprehensive military history museums in Europe. The park itself is 37 hectares of greenery popular with joggers, families, and EU Quarter professionals.
Did you know? The triumphal arch was commissioned to celebrate Belgium's 50th anniversary in 1880 but took so long to build that it wasn't finished until 1905, 25 years late.
