About Museu dos Biscainhos
An elegant 17th-century noble townhouse turned museum, showcasing Portuguese decorative arts, silverware, porcelain, furniture, tapestries, set in beautiful baroque gardens, with Roman mosaic foundations visible in the ground floor.
The Museu dos Biscainhos is housed in a magnificent 17th-century baroque noble townhouse in the heart of Braga's historic centre, and is one of the finest small museums of decorative arts in northern Portugal. The palace was built in the late 17th century and was owned by a succession of noble families before being acquired by the Braga City Council in 1963 and converted into a museum. The interior retains its original baroque decoration, painted ceilings, polychrome azulejo tile panels, carved woodwork, and ornate plasterwork. The museum collections include important examples of Portuguese silver, Chinese porcelain acquired through the India trade, European and Portuguese furniture, tapestries, and paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries. The ground floor features an extraordinary survival: a section of intact Roman mosaic pavement from Bracara Augusta, preserved in situ beneath the palace and visible through the original stone floor.
Did you know? The ground floor of the Museu dos Biscainhos palace contains an extraordinary find: an intact section of Roman mosaic pavement from 2nd-century Bracara Augusta, discovered when the building was excavated for restoration, it was preserved exactly where Roman citizens walked 1,800 years ago.
