About Braga Municipal Market

Braga's vibrant covered market, housed in a 1930s Art Deco building in the historic centre, fresh produce from the Minho region, regional cheeses, smoked meats, local bread, and the daily commerce that brings the city to life every morning.

The Mercado Municipal de Braga occupies a handsome 1930s Art Deco building in the heart of the historic centre, a few steps from the Cathedral and the Archbishop's Palace. The market is the primary retail food market for the Braga region, serving both local residents and the restaurant trade. The ground floor is dedicated to fresh produce, vegetables and fruits from the fertile Minho valley, fresh fish delivered daily from the Atlantic coast, and butcher stalls selling the pork products for which the Minho is famous: presunto (cured ham), alheira (bread and poultry sausage), and various smoked sausages and cuts. The upper floor features regional specialities: the famous Braga bread (pão de Braga), artisan cheeses, honey, and the distinctive smoked meats and sausages of the region. The market is at its busiest in the early morning and on Saturdays.

Did you know? The alheira, one of the most beloved Portuguese sausages, widely sold at Braga market, was invented by Portuguese Jews and New Christians in the 16th century, around the time of the Portuguese Inquisition (established 1536), as a way of appearing to conform to Christian sausage-eating culture while actually avoiding pork: it is made from bread, chicken, game, and spices, but not pork.
