Abandoibarra was once Bilbao's industrial riverfront, a desolate strip of rusting cranes, empty docks, and contaminated soil that stretched along the south bank of the Nervión. Today it is one of the most celebrated examples of urban regeneration in the world. The transformation, which began in the early 1990s following a devastating flood and the final closure of the last shipyards, has produced a remarkable riverside quarter: the Guggenheim Museum, the Palacio Euskalduna concert hall, the Pedro Arrupe footbridge, riverside parks, the Biblioteca Foral, luxury hotels, and apartments. The regeneration followed a comprehensive masterplan by Cesar Pelli and others, and has been studied by planners from around the world.
