About Berlin Wall Memorial
The most significant preserved section of the Berlin Wall on Bernauer Strasse, with the original death strip, a documentation centre, and the Chapel of Reconciliation on the site of a church demolished by East Germany.
The Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Strasse is the most important site for understanding the Wall and its human consequences. The Berlin Wall was built overnight on 12-13 August 1961, dividing 155 kilometres through and around the city. At Bernauer Strasse, the Wall ran along the very edge of apartment buildings, and in the desperate early days, East Germans jumped from windows into West Berlin below. The memorial preserves the last authentic section of the border fortifications, including the death strip with its patrol track, floodlights, and anti-vehicle trenches. A documentation centre offers a comprehensive exhibition of the Wall's construction, the escape attempts, around 140 people were killed trying to cross, and the personal stories of divided families. The outdoor memorial stretches 1.4 kilometres along the street. The Chapel of Reconciliation, built in 2000, stands on the site of a church blown up by the East German state in 1985.
Did you know? The Wall was built in a single night, starting at midnight on 12-13 August 1961, and Berliners woke to find the city cut in two with no warning.
