About Brandenburg Gate

Berlin's most iconic neoclassical monument, built in 1791, stands as the enduring symbol of German division, reunification, and democratic triumph.

The Brandenburg Gate stands at the western end of Unter den Linden boulevard as Berlin's most powerful symbol. Completed in 1791, it was designed by Carl Gotthard Langhans in the Doric neoclassical style inspired by the Propylaea of Athens. Twelve columns form five passages; the central one was reserved exclusively for royalty and later for heads of state. Crowning the structure is Johann Gottfried Schadow's famous Quadriga, the goddess Victoria in a four-horse chariot. Napoleon removed it to Paris in 1806 as a war trophy, and the Prussians quietly added an Iron Cross when they recovered it in 1814. During the Cold War the gate stood sealed in the death strip between East and West Berlin, utterly inaccessible for 28 years. On 9 November 1989, crowds climbed the Wall just metres away and the gate became the enduring symbol of reunification and freedom. Today it anchors Pariser Platz, surrounded by the embassies of the United States, France, and Britain.
