About Grunewald & Wannsee
Berlin's vast southwestern forest and lake district, 3,000 hectares of pine forest, the Wannsee bathing lake popular since the 1920s, and the Villa of the 1942 Wannsee Conference where the Holocaust was planned.
The Grunewald is a vast forest covering 3,000 hectares in the southwestern part of Berlin, forming the largest urban forest in the city and one of the great natural lungs of the German capital. The forest stretches from the Havel River in the west to the suburbs of Wilmersdorf and Zehlendorf in the east. At its southwestern edge lies the Wannsee, a series of lakes formed by the Havel River, including the Großer Wannsee, where Berliners have been swimming and sunbathing since the 1920s in what is Germany's largest inland lido. The Wannsee is also associated with one of the most chilling moments in the history of the Holocaust: on 20 January 1942, senior Nazi officials gathered in a lakeside villa, the House of the Wannsee Conference, to coordinate the 'Final Solution,' the systematic murder of Europe's Jewish population. That villa is now a memorial and education centre open to visitors.
Did you know? The Wannsee Conference of January 1942, which coordinated the Holocaust, lasted only about 90 minutes, the brevity was a sign of how thoroughly the decision to murder Europe's Jews had already been made before the meeting.
