About Berliner Philharmonie

Hans Scharoun's revolutionary 1963 concert hall, home of the Berlin Philharmonic, where the orchestra performs in the round surrounded by audience on all sides, one of the greatest concert halls in the world.

The Berliner Philharmonie is widely regarded as one of the acoustically finest and architecturally most innovative concert halls in the world. Completed in 1963, the building was designed by architect Hans Scharoun in a style that broke completely with the traditional shoebox concert hall design. Scharoun's revolutionary concept placed the orchestra at the centre of the building, surrounded by the audience on all sides in asymmetric terraced blocks, 'vineyard seating', so that no seat is more than 32 metres from the conductor. The building's dramatic irregular roofline, often compared to a circus tent or a ship in full sail, makes it immediately recognisable in the Berlin landscape. The hall is home to the Berlin Philharmonic, one of the world's great orchestras, led by great conductors including Herbert von Karajan and Simon Rattle. The acoustics are considered among the best on earth. Tickets for performances are among the most sought-after in classical music.

Did you know? The 'vineyard seating' concept, orchestra at centre, audience on all sides, was pioneered here and has since been adopted by concert halls worldwide including the Walt Disney Concert Hall in LA and the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg.
