About St George's Market

A magnificent Victorian covered market built in the 1890s, hosting three weekly markets, Variety on Fridays, City Food and Craft on Saturdays, and Sunday Speciality, repeatedly voted the best market in the British Isles.

St George's Market is one of Belfast's oldest and most beloved institutions, a magnificent Victorian covered market on May Street in the city centre. The current building was constructed in stages between 1890 and 1896, replacing earlier market buildings on the same site, and has been a listed building since 1975. Three weekly markets fill the vast wrought-iron and brick hall: the Friday Variety Market mixes fresh food, antiques, books, and clothing; the celebrated Saturday City Food, Craft and Garden Market draws local food producers, artisan bakers, cheese-mongers, and craft makers; and the Sunday Speciality Market offers a curated selection of specialist foods and artisan products. St George's has won the BBC Good Food Show's award for Best Market multiple times and consistently ranks among the finest markets in Ireland and Great Britain. The market's seafood is particularly renowned, with direct access to the extraordinarily rich waters of the Irish Sea bringing world-class fish and shellfish to the stalls each week. The building's magnificent Victorian ironwork, with its central clock and elaborately decorated roof trusses, makes the market a beautiful destination in itself.

Did you know? St George's Market has been trading on its current site since at least 1604, making it one of the oldest continuously operating markets in the British Isles.
