About HMS Caroline

The last surviving warship from the Battle of Jutland (1916) and the only WWI Royal Navy vessel still in battle-worn condition, moored as a museum ship in Belfast's Titanic Quarter.

HMS Caroline, moored in Alexandra Dock in Belfast's Titanic Quarter, is one of the most remarkable heritage ships in the world: the last surviving warship from the Battle of Jutland, the largest naval battle in history, and the only surviving Royal Navy vessel from the First World War still in battle-worn condition. Built by Cammell Laird at Birkenhead, she was launched in September 1914 and commissioned into the Royal Navy as a C-class light cruiser. On May 31st–June 1st, 1916, she participated in the Battle of Jutland, the clash between Britain's Grand Fleet and Germany's High Seas Fleet that involved over 250 ships and 100,000 men. HMS Caroline survived the battle without serious damage, taking part in the night actions as the fleets manoeuvred in the darkness of the North Sea. After the war she served as a Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve training vessel in Belfast from 1924 until 2011, an extraordinary 87 years of continuous service that paradoxically preserved her original 1914-16 fabric. A meticulous restoration completed in 2016 returned her to her 1916 Battle of Jutland configuration, and today every part of the ship, from the engine room to the bridge, is open to visitors.

Did you know? HMS Caroline remained on Royal Navy service from 1914 until her decommissioning in 2011, at the end she was the second-oldest ship in commission after HMS Victory, and her long Belfast reserve duty paradoxically preserved her original WWI fabric.
