About Novartis Campus
The global pharmaceutical giant's headquarters on the Rhine, an extraordinary architectural campus with buildings by Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, SANAA, Diener & Diener, and Tadao Ando; open for tours.
The Novartis Campus in Basel is one of the most ambitious corporate architectural projects of the early 21st century, a pharmaceutical company's headquarter complex that has been systematically developed using the world's most celebrated architects to create a coherent urban campus on the Rhine. Novartis, the Swiss pharmaceutical giant formed by the merger of Ciba-Geigy and Sandoz in 1996, determined that its new global headquarters would be an architectural statement on the quality of urban design. The campus covers approximately 200,000 square metres in the St Johann district of Basel, and its buildings include works by Frank Gehry (the Forum 3 building), Zaha Hadid, SANAA, Fumihiko Maki, David Chipperfield, and many other architects of world renown. The master plan for the campus was created by Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani, who applied strict urban design principles, establishing a street grid, defining building height, and ensuring coherent public spaces between buildings. Novartis offers public tours of the campus, which is otherwise a working pharmaceutical headquarters not routinely open to visitors. The tour provides a genuine architectural education, a concentrated example of how ambitious corporate patronage can create extraordinary public architecture.
