The Merian Park at Brüglingen is one of the most beautiful and historically significant parks in the Basel area, a remarkable survival of an 18th-century Baroque country estate that has been preserved as a public garden while maintaining the character of its original design. The estate was created by the Merian family, one of the most important patrician families in Basel history, whose members included the naturalist and artist Maria Sibylla Merian and the cartographer Matthäus Merian. The villa and formal gardens were laid out in the 18th century in the Baroque style, with parterres, allées, and geometric plantings typical of the period. Today the estate encompasses formal gardens, a rose garden with hundreds of varieties, a modern horticultural garden (Gärten der Welt), meadows, and the restored historic villa. The park is managed by the community foundation and is freely accessible to the public. It is a tranquil and beautiful space, particularly impressive when the roses are in bloom in June and July. The park lies about 5km south of central Basel and is reached by tram, making it an easy half-day excursion from the city centre.
