About Propylaea
The grand marble gateway to the Acropolis, a stage-set of Doric and Ionic columns designed to slow every visitor down before the sanctuary opened in front of them.
The Propylaea is the monumental gateway at the west end of the Acropolis, forming the sanctuary's single grand entrance. It was designed by the architect Mnesikles and built between 437 and 431 BC, immediately after the Parthenon. Construction stopped, still unfinished, on the eve of the Peloponnesian War in 431 BC. The central hall presents a six-column Doric front, while a double row of taller Ionic columns lines the passage running through it.
It was built mainly of Pentelic marble, with contrasting dark blue-grey Eleusinian limestone used for accent courses and the wings' lower walls. The north wing housed the Pinakotheke, a chamber that displayed paintings. The marble roof was reinforced with iron bars supporting its girders, an early use of structural iron in Greek architecture. Damaged and altered over the centuries, the gateway still retains much of its original design.
Did you know? The gateway was never finished. Work stopped in 431 BC as the Peloponnesian War began, and rough lifting bosses, the knobs masons used to hoist blocks into place, still sit uncarved on some of its stones.
