About National Archaeological Museum
Greece's greatest treasure-house, home to the gold Mask of Agamemnon, the geared Antikythera Mechanism and the sea-raised Artemision Bronze, a mile or so north of the Acropolis.
The National Archaeological Museum of Athens holds the richest collection of ancient Greek antiquities in the world and is the largest museum in Greece. It occupies a large neoclassical building on Patission Street, north of the city centre, built between 1866 and 1889 by architects including Ludwig Lange, Panagis Kalkos, Armodios Vlachos and Ernst Ziller. Its Mycenaean collection includes the gold Mask of Agamemnon, found by Heinrich Schliemann at Mycenae in 1876 and dated to about 1550 to 1500 BC.
Among its most celebrated exhibits are the Antikythera Mechanism, a geared astronomical instrument of about the first century BC often called the world's oldest known analogue computer, and the Artemision Bronze, a larger-than-life figure of Zeus or Poseidon raised from the sea off Cape Artemision. The museum also holds the bronze Jockey of Artemision from the same wreck and the Bronze Age wall-paintings from Akrotiri on Thera.
Did you know? The gold 'Mask of Agamemnon' is a romantic label given by its finder, Heinrich Schliemann. Scholars date the mask centuries before the traditional era of the Trojan War, so it cannot be the face of Homer's king.
