About Zappeion

An elegant neoclassical hall built for an Olympic revival, wrapped around a circular open courtyard, where the 1896 Games fenced and Greece signed its way into Europe in 1979.

The Zappeion is a neoclassical hall on the edge of the National Garden in central Athens, designed by the Danish architect Theophil Hansen. It was funded by the national benefactor Evangelos Zappas and completed by his cousin Konstantinos Zappas. Its foundation stone was laid on 20 January 1874, and the building was inaugurated on 20 October 1888. It was the first building erected specifically for the revival of the modern Olympic Games and is arranged around a circular open atrium ringed by a peristyle of Corinthian columns.

During the 1896 Olympic Games the Zappeion served as the fencing venue, and at the 1906 Intercalated Games it functioned as the Olympic Village. In May 1979 the documents for Greece's accession to the European Communities were signed here. Set within its own grounds, the Zappeion Gardens, the building today serves as a conference and exhibition centre.

Did you know? The hall honours Evangelos Zappas, a benefactor who financed a series of revived 'Zappas Olympics' in Athens from 1859, decades before Baron de Coubertin's celebrated 1896 Games. He is the half-forgotten father of the Olympic revival.
