About Rubens House
The palatial Baroque home and studio of Pieter Paul Rubens, where he lived, worked, and trained his pupils from 1610 until his death in 1640, one of Europe's great artist houses.
The Rubenshuis, Rubens House, is the former home and studio of Pieter Paul Rubens, one of the greatest painters in Western art history. Rubens purchased the property in 1610 and spent the next three years transforming it into a palatial complex that reflected both his immense wealth and his sophisticated artistic tastes.
The house combines a Flemish residence with an Italian-inspired garden studio, connected by a magnificent baroque portico that Rubens designed himself. The complex was simultaneously his home, his studio, where he and his team produced paintings for royal courts and churches across Europe, and a showcase for his extensive collection of antique sculptures, paintings, and decorative objects. The garden, restored to its seventeenth-century appearance, features the famous curved portico with classical imagery that Rubens incorporated as a direct quotation from his extensive studies in Italy. The house museum contains original Rubens paintings, period furniture, and recreations of the studio environment.
Did you know? Rubens designed his home to reflect his status as a scholar-gentleman rather than a mere craftsman, the garden portico quotes directly from his studies of classical Roman architecture in Italy.
