About Port of Antwerp & Red Star Line Museum

Europe's second largest port and the original departure point of the Red Star Line, from which two million Europeans emigrated to America between 1873 and 1934.

The Port of Antwerp is the second largest port in Europe, handling over 200 million tonnes of cargo annually from 200 kilometres of quays along the Scheldt river. Its history as a trading hub stretches back to the medieval period when Antwerp was the commercial capital of northern Europe, and its modern role as a gateway to Europe makes it one of the most economically significant places on the continent.

The Red Star Line Museum, housed in the original departure sheds of the Red Star Line shipping company in the Eilandje district, tells one of the most poignant stories connected to the port: between 1873 and 1934, over two million Europeans, from Russia, Poland, Romania, and across central and eastern Europe, departed from Antwerp's docks on Red Star Line ships bound for New York and Ellis Island. Among them, in 1933, was Albert Einstein, fleeing Nazi Germany. The museum preserves the original departure halls and uses personal stories, documents, and photographs to recreate the extraordinary human drama of mass emigration.

Did you know? Among the 2 million people who departed from Antwerp on the Red Star Line (1873-1934) was Albert Einstein, who sailed in 1933 as he fled Nazi Germany.
