The Geelvinck Hinlopen Huis is one of the finest surviving examples of a seventeenth-century Amsterdam patrician mansion, and one of the city's best-kept secrets. Built in 1687 for Albert Geelvinck and his wife Sara Hinlopen, both from prominent families of Amsterdam's Golden Age merchant aristocracy, whose names the house still bears, it stands on the Keizersgracht (Emperor's Canal) and has been exceptionally well preserved. Unlike many of Amsterdam's historic canal houses which are now offices or apartments, the Geelvinck Hinlopen Huis functions as a house museum, allowing visitors to experience the interiors of a wealthy seventeenth-century Amsterdam home much as they appeared when occupied. The house contains period furniture, decorative arts, portraits, and household objects from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The interior includes a formal reception room, a kitchen fitted in the 18th century style, and a beautiful garden, one of Amsterdam's few remaining historic canal house gardens. The house also hosts intimate chamber music concerts.
