The Scheepvaartmuseum (National Maritime Museum, or Het Scheepvaartmuseum) is the Netherlands' most important maritime museum and one of the finest maritime museums in the world. It occupies the former Amsterdam Admiralty storehouse ('s Lands Zeemagazijn), a monumental seventeenth-century building on the Oosterdok waterfront that was built in 1656 to store the equipment, munitions, and supplies of the Dutch naval fleet. The building is one of the largest and best-preserved seventeenth-century warehouses in the Netherlands, and its magnificent central courtyard, now covered by a stunning glass roof, is one of the great interior spaces of Amsterdam. The museum's collections tell the story of the Netherlands' maritime history from the earliest trading voyages to the present, with extraordinary collections of historical maps, navigation instruments, ship models, paintings, and artefacts. Moored outside at the quay is the Amsterdam, a full-scale replica of an eighteenth-century VOC merchant ship, which can be explored by visitors.
