From the 13th century Amalfi became a celebrated centre of papermaking, producing a heavy cotton-rag paper known as "bambagina" using techniques learned through its trade with the Arab world. The Museo della Carta (Paper Museum) is housed in a paper mill dating from the 13th century, one of the oldest in Europe, where the original water-powered machinery, vats, and presses survive. Visitors can watch demonstrations of paper being made by hand in the centuries-old way, and Amalfi paper is still produced commercially in the valley today.
