About Amalfi Cathedral (Sant'Andrea)

The dazzling striped cathedral that crowns Amalfi, reached by a steep flight of steps and dedicated to Saint Andrew, whose relics have rested in its crypt since 1208.

Rising above the Piazza del Duomo at the top of a grand staircase of sixty-two steps, the Cathedral of Saint Andrew is the symbol of Amalfi. A church has stood here since the 9th century, and the building grew over the medieval centuries into the dramatic ensemble we see today. The polychrome striped facade, bands of stone and a glittering golden mosaic of Christ, was rebuilt in the late 19th century after the medieval front collapsed in 1861, faithfully recreating the original Arab-Norman, Byzantine-influenced style. The bronze doors at the entrance were cast in Constantinople before 1066, the oldest doors of their kind in Italy. Inside and below lie the cathedral's greatest treasure: the relics of the Apostle Andrew, brought from Constantinople in 1206 after the Fourth Crusade and placed in the crypt in 1208.

Did you know? The cathedral's bronze doors, cast in Constantinople before 1066, are the oldest bronze church doors in Italy, they were the gift of Pantaleone, a rich Amalfitan merchant living in the Byzantine capital.
