Martina Franca is the urban centrepiece of the Valle d'Itria, a city of over 40,000 inhabitants with one of the finest baroque historic centres in Puglia, famous throughout Italy for its capocollo (a cured pork product of exceptional quality, protected as an IGP and a Slow Food Presidium), its viticulture (the Valle d'Itria and Martina Franca DOC wines), and the Festival della Valle d'Itria, an internationally acclaimed summer opera festival that has been staged annually since 1975. The historic centre is built in a distinctive local version of baroque architecture that uses the white limestone of the Murge to spectacular effect, with the Palazzo Ducale and the Basilica di San Martino as its principal monuments. The weekly market is one of the largest in the region.
