About Castellana Grotte

The most spectacular cave system in Italy, a series of underground chambers and galleries formed over millions of years in the limestone of the Murge, culminating in the breathtaking Grotta Bianca.

The Grotte di Castellana are the most famous and extensive cave system in Italy, and among the most spectacular in all of Europe. The caves were first scientifically explored in 1938 by the geologist Franco Anelli, who descended into a previously known open cavern and discovered that it led to an enormous system of underground passages, chambers, and formations extending for over three kilometres. The most celebrated feature is the Grotta Bianca, the White Cave, a chamber of extraordinary dimensions whose walls, ceiling, and floor are covered in pure white aragonite and calcite formations: stalactites and stalagmites of blinding whiteness, translucent curtains of stone, columns and pillars of crystalline calcite that create an effect of absolute otherworldly beauty.

Did you know? The Grotta Bianca (White Cave) at Castellana is considered one of the most beautiful cave chambers in the world, its pure white aragonite formations give it a quality of unearthly beauty that has made it the most photographed cave interior in Italy.
