About Merchant Adventurers' Hall

A vast oak-framed medieval guildhall of the 1350s, the largest still used for its original purpose in Britain, with an almshouse-hospital below, owned by the same Company for over 660 years.

The Merchant Adventurers' Hall is a medieval guildhall built from about 1357 by a religious fraternity dedicated to Christ and the Virgin Mary. Its great timber-framed Great Hall is the largest timber-framed building in the UK still standing and used for its original purpose. Below it, an undercroft housed an almshouse-hospital for the poor of York from 1371, with an adjoining chapel. The fraternity evolved into a company of mercers, and in 1581 Queen Elizabeth I granted it the status of the Company of Merchant Adventurers of the City of York. That Company still owns and uses the hall today, with account books running continuously since 1432. A Grade I listed building of oak framing held together with wooden pegs, its 1358 accounts record the purchase of around 100 oaks. It lies within the historic city of York.

Did you know? The oak-framed Great Hall, built in the 1350s and held together with wooden pegs, is the largest timber-framed building in Britain still standing and still used for the very purpose it was built for.
