About Royal Chapel
A chapel that looks like a Gothic cathedral until your eye hits its Corinthian columns, where Louis XIV worshipped from a private balcony and Marie-Antoinette was married.
The Royal Chapel is the fifth and last chapel built at Versailles, dedicated to Saint Louis, patron of the Bourbon dynasty. Designed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart, it was begun in 1689, halted by war, resumed in 1699 and completed after his death in 1708 by his brother-in-law Robert de Cotte; it was consecrated in 1710, the last major addition of Louis XIV's reign.
It is a two-storey palatine chapel: the court occupied the lower nave, while the king and royal family attended Mass from the upper gallery, which opens directly onto the King's Apartment. Its style pairs a Gothic-inspired vertical structure with a Corinthian colonnade, anticipating later neoclassicism. The largest of the palace's chapels, it is integrated into the north end of the building rather than free-standing, and later inspired the palatine chapel at the Palace of Caserta. The wedding Mass of the future Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette took place here in 1770.
Did you know? This chapel became a role model abroad: when the Bourbon kings of Naples raised their vast palace at Caserta, the architect Vanvitelli studied it closely before designing the royal chapel there.
