About Scuola Grande di San Marco
The Scuola Grande di San Marco is one of the finest Renaissance buildings in Venice, its facade featuring extraordinary trompe-l'oeil marble columns and lions in perspective, today it serves as the entrance hall of Venice's main civic hospital.
The Scuola Grande di San Marco is one of the six great confraternities (scuole grandi) of Venice, lay religious brotherhoods that performed charitable work and accumulated enormous wealth and artistic patronage. The current building dates from the 1480s-1490s and represents the high point of Venetian Renaissance architecture.
The facade, facing the Campo di SS Giovanni e Paolo, is one of the most remarkable in Venice. Designed by Pietro Lombardo and Giovanni Antonio Buora, and completed by Mauro Codussi, it features two tiers of decorative marble panels, with extraordinary trompe-l'oeil marble reliefs showing pairs of crouching lions in perspective, their heads turned so that they seem to gaze out at the viewer from an apparently three-dimensional space.
The interior was once decorated with paintings by Gentile and Giovanni Bellini, Vittore Carpaccio, and Tintoretto, most of which were removed to the Accademia after Napoleon suppressed the confraternities in 1806. The building now serves as the entrance and administrative headquarters of the Ospedale Civile, Venice's main hospital, though access for visitors is possible to view the exterior and the lower rooms.
