About Borgo Medievale (Medieval Village)
A full-scale faithful reconstruction of a 15th-century Piedmontese medieval castle and village, built for the 1884 Italian Exhibition, free entry, entirely convincing, surprisingly moving.
The Borgo Medievale di Torino is one of the most unexpected and charming surprises in the whole of Italy. Located within the Parco del Valentino on the banks of the Po, this is a full-scale faithful reconstruction of a fifteenth-century Piedmontese mountain castle and village, built in 1884 for the Esposizione Generale Italiana (Italian General Exhibition). A team of historians, archaeologists, and craftsmen spent three years studying actual surviving Piedmontese medieval buildings before constructing their replica, ensuring architectural and decorative details were accurate to the period. The result is a walled village with stone houses, wooden balconies, a main street, workshops, and a castle tower, all built using authentic materials and techniques. Entry to the village and castle courtyard is free. Inside, the rooms have been furnished in a style appropriate to the period, with reproduction period furniture, frescoes copied from actual medieval Piedmontese buildings, and craft demonstrations in summer. Unlike many "medieval theme park" attractions, the Borgo was built with genuine scholarly intent and stands up to scrutiny.
Did you know? The Borgo Medievale has been entirely free to enter since 1884, a 140-year tradition of public access that makes it one of the most generous historic attractions in Italy.
