About Piazza IX Aprile

The spectacular terrace piazza of Taormina, with San Giuseppe church and the Torre dell'Orologio clock tower, offering the most famous panoramic view of the Ionian Sea and Etna.

Piazza IX Aprile is the main terrace piazza of Taormina, the point midway along Corso Umberto I where the street widens into a broad platform suspended above the Ionian Sea. On one side stand the Baroque church of San Giuseppe and the medieval Torre dell'Orologio, the clock tower that was part of the original city gate. On the other side, and along the balustrade, stretches one of the most celebrated views in Sicily: the deep blue of the Ionian far below, the coastline curving south toward Catania and north toward Messina, and in clear weather the mountains of Calabria across the strait. When Etna is visible, which it is on most days, it rises imposingly above the southern horizon, its snow cap or steam plume adding a volcanic majesty to the composition.

Did you know? Piazza IX Aprile commemorates 9 April 1860, the date of Taormina's uprising against Bourbon rule that preceded Garibaldi's landing and the unification of Sicily into Italy.
