About Madonna della Rocca

A tiny pilgrimage chapel carved into the natural rock of the Taormina cliff, perched halfway up the path to the castle with extraordinary views and a centuries-old tradition of local devotion.

The Madonna della Rocca is a small pilgrimage chapel carved directly into the natural cliff face of Monte Tauro, about halfway up the path that leads from the upper town to the Castello Saraceno. The chapel occupies a cave in the volcanic and limestone rock, with a small white-painted facade attached to the cliff face and an interior barely large enough for a dozen worshippers. The veneration of this site, a natural rocky cavity high above the town, almost certainly predates Christianity, following the ancient Sicilian tradition of worshipping at cave and spring sites. The chapel contains a small statue of the Madonna and is visited regularly by Taorminesi on important feast days. The views from the chapel terrace, looking south over the town and the bay, are among the best in Taormina.

Did you know? The Madonna della Rocca chapel occupies a natural cave that was almost certainly used as a sacred space before Christianity, ancient Sicilian and Greek-Sicilian religion frequently venerated natural caves as homes of nymphs or minor deities.
