About Museo Archeologico Paolo Orsi
The finest archaeological museum in Sicily and one of the best in Italy, housing the Landolina Venus, prehistoric and Greek Bronze Age finds, and an unparalleled collection from the ancient Syracusan civilisation.
The Museo Archeologico Paolo Orsi, named after the great Sicilian archaeologist who excavated many of the finds it contains, is widely regarded as the most important archaeological museum in Sicily and one of the top five in all of Italy. Housed in a modern building within the grounds of the Villa Landolina park, the museum contains over 18,000 objects spanning prehistory through the Greek colonial period, the Hellenistic age, and early Christianity. The most celebrated single object is the Landolina Venus, a 2nd-century Roman copy of a lost Hellenistic original, discovered in Syracuse in 1804, depicting Venus rising from the sea with her draperies. The museum also contains extensive material from the Pantalica necropolis and the earliest Greek colonisation of Sicily.
Did you know? The Museo Paolo Orsi contains over 18,000 objects, but this represents only a fraction of the hundreds of thousands of artefacts excavated in and around Syracuse since the 19th century. The storage rooms of the museum hold far more than the galleries can display.
