The Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain de Strasbourg (MAMCS) opened in 1998 in a dramatic riverside building designed by architect Adrien Fainsilber, a long, sleek glass and steel structure with a transparent façade that floods the interior with natural light. The permanent collection is one of the finest modern art collections in France outside Paris, with particular strengths in German Expressionism, Dada and Surrealism, and early abstraction. The collection includes significant works by Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Max Ernst (who was born in Brühl near Cologne but spent formative years in Strasbourg), Hans Arp (a Strasbourg native who co-founded Dada), Claude Monet, Auguste Rodin, and Gustav Klimt. The museum's photography collection is exceptional, and the graphic arts collection, with over 25,000 works, is one of the richest in France. Regular temporary exhibitions bring major international shows to Strasbourg.
