About Bagni della Regina Giovanna
A natural sea pool formed in the ruins of a Roman villa 3km west of Sorrento, a favourite swimming spot reachable by a clifftop walk, where a gap in the sea rocks creates a perfectly sheltered inlet of clear water.
The Bagni della Regina Giovanna, the Baths of Queen Giovanna, are a natural sea pool formed in the ruins of a Roman villa on the headland of Capo di Sorrento, about 3 kilometres west of the town centre. Despite the romantic name (referring to Queen Joan I of Naples, who supposedly swam here in the 14th century), the site is an ancient Roman villa, probably the Villa of Agrippa Postumus, that has been gradually consumed by the sea over two millennia. What remains is a series of ruined walls, a natural arch of rock, and a gap in the headland where the sea has carved out a perfectly protected cove with remarkably clear and calm water. To reach it, you take the cliff path that leads west from Sorrento through the villa gardens and olive groves of the headland, a walk of about 45 minutes on an unmarked but well-known path. The pool itself is accessed by a short scramble down the rocks. Swimming here, in sight of ancient Roman masonry, with the Bay of Naples stretching north and Capri visible to the southwest, is one of the great Sorrentine experiences.
Did you know? The Roman villa at Capo di Sorrento is identified by some archaeologists as the Villa of Agrippa Postumus, a grandson of Augustus who was exiled to this remote headland by the emperor and later killed on Augustus's orders. If correct, this would make the swimming pool site one of the most historically significant Roman remains on the Sorrento peninsula.
