About Limoncello and Sorrento Lemons

The Sorrento peninsula produces the finest lemons in Italy, the Limone di Sorrento IGP, and from them makes limoncello, the bright yellow liqueur that has become one of the most recognised products of the Italian south.

The Limone di Sorrento, the Sorrento lemon, is a large, thin-skinned variety with an exceptionally high citric acid content and an intensely aromatic essential oil in the skin. It has been cultivated on the Sorrento peninsula and along the Amalfi Coast for at least five centuries, and holds an IGP (Indicazione Geografica Protetta) designation that restricts the authentic product to this specific geographical area. Sorrento lemons are grown in terraced gardens under pergolas of cane and wire that shade the fruit from direct sun, producing the characteristic pale yellow colour and the thick fragrant skin. Limoncello, the liqueur made by steeping the lemon peel in neutral spirit, then mixing with a sugar syrup, is the iconic product of this region. It is served ice-cold as a digestivo after meals throughout southern Italy. Several limoncello producers in Sorrento offer factory tours and tastings; the Gargiulo family factory and the Limoncello di Sorrento establishment are well-known options. The Piazza Tasso area has numerous limoncello shops selling bottles in the characteristic yellow and blue livery.

Did you know? The word "limoncello" does not appear in Italian dictionaries before the 1980s, though the drink itself is clearly much older. The commercial production and marketing of limoncello as a branded product began in the 1980s and 1990s, transforming what had been a domestic family recipe into one of Italy's best-known exported liqueurs.
